The art of lost words

On display at a refurbished Victorian gymnasium opposite London's St Pancras Station, The Art of Lost Words will feature original work from some of the UK's best-known and emerging designers and illustrators, in an exploration of language as creative inspiration.

43 participants have chosen from a list of the dictionary's lovely but little-known words, with an open brief to create an original work inspired by their choice.

Participants range from designers such as SPIN, Why Not Associates, Jonathan Ellery, Alan Kitching, NB: Studio and Kate Gibb, to artists Sam Winston, Ceri Amphlett, Russell Mills and Andy Smith.

Words to be given a creative makeover were selected for their rarity of usage and evocative qualities, and include such exotic numbers as "habroneme," "caliginosity" and "skirr".

Each of the invited participants works with interpreting words on a daily basis and their responses the diversity of media in which they create -- letterpress prints, silkscreen posters, laser-cut objects, artist books and animations will all appear in the exhibition.

Works and the words that inspired them will be on display at the German Gymnasium between 5-9 March.
